The village of San Salvatore is home to one of Sardinia’s most distinctive heritage sites: an ancient underground monument that preserves evidence of ancient worship, the history of the territory and the traditions of the Sinis Peninsula.
Located beneath the Church of San Salvatore, the Hypogeum leads visitors through a network of rock-cut chambers, inscriptions and traces left over the centuries by the people who once inhabited and used this remarkable place.
The Hypogeum of San Salvatore is one of Sardinia’s most unusual archaeological sites, located beneath the church at the centre of the village from which it takes its name.
Created between the Nuragic period and the Roman era, this underground monument preserves evidence of ancient cults and archaeological remains that tell the story of the site’s long history.
Today, the village of San Salvatore still retains its timeless atmosphere, making a visit to the site an even more memorable experience.
The Hypogeum extends beneath the Church of San Salvatore through a series of chambers carved into the rock, featuring inscriptions, symbols and decorations created over many centuries.
The site is also closely linked to local traditions and to the Corsa degli Scalzi, one of Sardinia’s best-known religious events.
A visit to San Salvatore offers the opportunity to discover a place where archaeology, faith and local memory continue to coexist.
