Overlooking the shores of the Cabras Lagoon, the Giovanni Marongiu Civic Museum houses some of Sardinia’s most important archaeological collections and serves as one of the principal cultural landmarks of the Sinis Peninsula.
The permanent exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the history of the region, from the earliest evidence of human settlement to the Nuragic, Punic and Roman communities that once inhabited this stretch of Sardinia’s western coast.
Opened in 1997 on the shores of the Cabras Lagoon, the Giovanni Marongiu Civic Museum preserves some of Sardinia’s most significant archaeological finds and provides the ideal introduction to the history of the Sinis Peninsula.
The museum tells the story of the civilisations that inhabited the area over the centuries through a permanent exhibition featuring prehistoric villages, Nuragic artefacts and finds from the peninsula’s ancient settlements.
The museum is home to the Giants of Mont’e Prama, the remarkable group of monumental sculptures that has become one of the most iconic symbols of ancient Sardinia and a unique testimony to the Nuragic civilisation in the Mediterranean.
The exhibition continues through galleries dedicated to the peninsula’s principal archaeological sites, including Cuccuru Is Arrius, Sa Osa and Tharros, as well as artefacts recovered from the Roman shipwreck off Mal di Ventre Island.
The visit offers a deeper understanding of the close relationship between the landscape of the Sinis Peninsula and its history through one of Sardinia’s most important archaeological museums.

The museum can be explored independently by following the designated visitor route from the entrance. Informational panels throughout the galleries provide insights into the museum’s principal artefacts and archaeological collections. A member of staff is also available in the Giants of Mont’e Prama gallery to provide information and answer questions.
To enhance the visit, the ArcheoVoce app is available with dedicated text and audio content about the Giants of Mont’e Prama.
Guided tours in Italian take place daily at scheduled times and are included in the admission ticket at no additional cost. Lasting approximately 30 minutes, the tour focuses on the galleries dedicated to the Giants of Mont’e Prama.
Visitors are welcome to join a guided tour even after it has started.
