Founded by the Carthaginians between the 8th and 7th centuries BC, the city became one of the Mediterranean’s principal trading centres during the Punic period thanks to its strategic position overlooking the sea.
Today, walking among its ruins means travelling through centuries of history while immersed in the unique coastal landscape of the Sinis Peninsula.
The archaeological site preserves important remains of the civilisations that inhabited this territory over the centuries.
Among the site’s most remarkable monuments are the Temple with Doric Semicolumns, the basalt-paved streets, the aqueduct and the Roman thermal baths.
Tharros continued to flourish during the Early Christian and medieval periods until the city’s final abandonment in 1071, when the episcopal seat was transferred to Oristano, the new capital of the Judicate of Arborea.

The site can be explored independently by following the designated visitor route from the entrance. Informational panels are located throughout the site, highlighting its main points of interest.

Guided tours in Italian take place daily at scheduled times and are included in the admission ticket at no additional cost.
Visitors are welcome to join a guided tour even after it has started.
