Standing on the headland overlooking Tharros and the waters of the Sinis Peninsula, the Spanish Tower of San Giovanni di Sinis is one of the most recognisable landmarks on Sardinia’s western coast. Built in the late sixteenth century during the Spanish rule of Sardinia, it formed part of the island’s coastal defence system, designed to monitor the surrounding territory and protect the peninsula from attacks arriving by sea.
The Spanish Tower of San Giovanni di Sinis overlooks the landscape surrounding Tharros and offers one of the most spectacular viewpoints on Sardinia’s western coast.
Built in the late sixteenth century during Spanish rule, it formed part of a network of coastal watchtowers constructed to defend the island against raids by North African corsairs.
Today, it remains one of the most recognisable landmarks of the Sinis Peninsula.
The tower maintained visual contact with the other coastal fortifications along the shoreline, overseeing the area between the Gulf of Oristano, Capo San Marco and the lagoons surrounding Cabras.
Following recent restoration work, visitors can now explore the interior of the tower and climb to its panoramic terrace, which offers sweeping views of the sea, the lagoons of the Sinis Peninsula and the landscape surrounding the ancient city of Tharros.

The tower can be explored independently, with access to its interior and panoramic terrace, offering views across the coastline of the Sinis Peninsula. Informational panels throughout the visit provide insights into the history of the tower and the island’s coastal defence system.
